Trieste is the capital of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in northeastern Italy. It is a port city that occupies a narrow strip of territory between the Adriatic Sea coast and the border with Slovenia on the Kras plateau, where limestone predominates. Italian, Austro-Hungarian and Slovenian influences are evident in its design, which encompasses an old medieval town and a neoclassical Austrian quarter.
